Seperately Managed Accounts (SMA)

What are SMAs?

Unlike traditional Limited Partnership investments with hedge funds, Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs) enable allocators to retain custody and ownership of their assets. Professional traders access the allocator's SMA—typically held on a centralized exchange or with a prime broker—and execute trading strategies by transmitting signals via API.

Key Advantages

Control

The SMA structure allows investors to maintain custody of assets in their own accounts. This grants investors the power to adjust leverage, pause trading, size up positions, and close accounts at their discretion without approval.

Transparency

While LP investments limit visibility to monthly reports or updates from the fund, SMAs offer investors real-time visibility into every transaction in their account.

Liquidity

SMAs typically have no lock-up period, as investors have the authority to liquidate their accounts at any time based on their own discretion.

Fee Structure

allocators using SMAs typically pay no management fees to traders, as they maintain custody of their assets. Instead, traders generally negotiate higher performance fees, which allocators pay from their profits at regular intervals as the trader achieves high water marks.
